Civil War Reunion
In 1913, Civil War veterans met in Gettysburg to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the battle in that very town. Over 50,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded or captured on the farmland located in Pennsylvania. Veterans returned from both sides, who were mostly in their 70s, to commemorate the war. More than 54,000 former soldiers from all over the country came to the reunion. Some traveled as long as five days from San Diego, California to attend the seven-day event.
Photographed here are honorably discharged veterans of the Grand Army Republic (the north) and United Confederate Veterans (the south) politely shaking hands.
